The Golden Baseball League announced that the Calgary Vipers and Edmonton Cracker Cats will join the GBL for 2008 and beyond. The Vipers and Cracker Cats will be part of an at least 8-team Golden League in 2008 that will include an 88 game schedule running from late May to early September. Calgary and Edmonton, both cities with decades of minor league baseball tradition, will host 44 home games in their respective stadiums.
If their rosters are any indication, the Vipers and Cracker Cats will fit right in with the talent laden Golden Baseball League. Vipers star Darryl "Mr. 400" Brinkley was named Baseball America’s Player Of The Year after becoming the first minor leaguer to hit .400 in the modern era. He and third baseman Carlos Duncan were named to Baseball America’s All-independent First All-Star team. Both have made verbal commitments to play in Calgary in 2008.
In addition, Edmonton pitcher Scott Richmond and catcher Brian Munhall were both signed by major league organizations in the past month. The Golden League had 15 players signed by major league organizations this past season and placed three of the first six players on the Baseball America top 10 prospects list including Long Beach Armada pitcher and current Milwaukee Brewer farmhand, Dane De La Rosa
With the new expansion, the 2008 GBL will be comprised of a North and South Division with four teams qualifying for the playoffs. To celebrate the addition of their neighbors up north, the Armada organization has already begun to plan an “Oh Canada” promotional night for the 2008 season.
