Chico Manager Kory DeHaan Signed By San Diego Padres As Minor League Coach

1st Year Manager Accepts Hitting Coach Job for Padres Arizona Rookie League Team

(Chico, CA. December 9, 2009) The Chico Outlaws announced today that Manager Kory DeHaan has been signed by the San Diego Padres as the hitting coach for their Rookie-level minor league team in Peoria, Arizona.

"Even though he was a rookie Manager, Kory was one of the best skippers I've worked with in my 14 seasons running minor league ballclubs," said Chico Manager Curt Jacey. "His professonalism, intelligence, and passion for the players are all at the top of the scale. He should do very well in the San Diego organization and I'm looking forward to someday getting comp tickets from him to watch him in action at Petco Park."

DeHaan started last season as the hitting coach for the Outlaws, his first professional coaching position after a seven year playing career that included two seasons in the major leagues with San Diego. He was promoted mid-season to the manager position for Chico to replace Greg Cadaret and righted a struggling club, was credited with instilling a positive and enthusiastic team attitude, and showed impressive development of a number of the younger players. He was the only manager in the Independent Minor Leagues to have two of his players placed on the Basball America All Independent Top Prospects List, and converting Mikael Ryder from reliever to starter garnered the young hurler the Golden Baseball League Rookie Pitcher of the Year honors.

"I'm excited about being back with the Padres and beginning my professional coaching career with a major league organization," said De Haan. "It's hard to leave Chico as the team, fans, and community make it one of the best places to manage in minor league baseball. I am also very thankful for the the opportunity that the Chico Outlaws provided which allowed me to start my pro coaching career and demonstrate my abilities."

DeHaan is the latest is what is becoming a long line of GBL Managers and coaches being selected by major league oragnizations. This month alone has also seen Orange County Flyers manager Phil Nevin hired to be the AA manager for Detroit, ex-San Diego Surf Dawgs skipper Terry Kennedy hired as the AAA manager for San Diego, and ex-Chico Outlaws manager Mark Parent hired as the High-A manager for Philadelphia.
