| Coit & Martinez Cycles |
| |
7/30/2007
The St. George Roadrunners pitching staff was the victim of a rare baseball feat -- twice in the span of 6 days as Orange County OF John Coit and Long Beach 1B Jaime Martinez both hit for the cycle by collecting a single, double, triple, and home run in a single game. There was only one player to hit for the cycle in all of independent professional baseball in 2006, which was by Pichi Balet of the Lincoln Salt Dogs of the American Association.
Coit, a rookie with the Orange County did his in the most spectacular style possible. First he pulled off a "natural" cycle by collecting the hits in order -- first the single, then the double, then the triple, capped off with a home run in the 8th inning in the Flyers 14-3 win over the Roadrunners on July 21st. Second, he punished St. George for releasing him just the day before as he was quickly snapped up by the Flyers and put into the starting lineup to exact his stunning revenge. Coit was 4-5 with 7 RBIs on the day.
Martinez, the second year Long Beach Armada first baseman and one of the leading hitters all season in the GBL, also torched the St. George pitching staff just six days later on July 27th as he went 4-4 with 5 RBIs as they Armada prevailed in a 16-5 victory.
